Japan's economy has suffered almost as much as the UK's during the recent downturn. Its ad market has lost almost a quarter of its value over the past three years, consumer confidence is the lowest in Asia, and there is talk of Japan being a "dying market" in the eyes of international advertisers who are now eyeing China and India instead So how has recession changed Japan's advertising market? Has it done anything to challenge the hegemony of agency titans Dentsu and Hakuhodu? Or has it entrenched the status quo? And how is Asia's largest advertising market standing up to the challenge of regional growth machines China and India?

SOCIAL MEDIA RULES
Japan's most popular social media site, Mixi, pulled in US$30m in advertising revenue in 2009, helping  it become one of the world's most profitable social networks. But its popularity is waning as users complain that the platform has become too advertising heavy, and rival sites such as MobageTown and GREE, which offer slicker interfaces with less intrusive advertising, are rapidly stealing share.
