Pepsi remakes 'cola wars' ad

NEW YORK - Pepsi has launched a new spot by TBWA/Chiat/Day that mimics a famous 1995 Pepsi ad, in which two Pepsi and Coca-Cola truck drivers exchange cans of their respective drinks.

The spot has been released online, ahead of it breaking on US TV on Monday.

The original ad, by BBDO and directed by Joe Pytka, is set in a diner where the truck drivers are taking a rest from the road.

The two men make friends over a jukebox song they like and proceed to try each other's drinks for the first time.

However, the Coke driver refuses to hand back the Pepsi because he likes it and the two men end up fighting, with a chair thrown through the diner window. The strapline, ‘Nothing else is a Pepsi’, appears at the end.

The new spot, also directed by Pytka, works with the same theme and features two new Pepsi and Coca-Cola drivers greeting each other in a diner over the jukebox song, ‘Why can’t we be friends?’.

When the men exchange cans of Pepsi Max and Coke Zero, the Pepsi driver gets out his smartphone and records the Coke driver drinking from a Pepsi can.

Asked what he is doing, the Pepsi man tells the Coke driver he is uploading the footage to YouTube.

The two men end up fighting, but this time they themselves crash through the diner window and the ad ends with the strapline: ‘Zero calories. Maximum Pepsi taste.’
