Twitter's fifth anniversary
You can't have failed to notice that Twitter was five years old this week, given the blanket coverage of the event on every media channel. And while we like Twitter and find it a fairly useful tool for disseminating information and news, we can't help feeling pleased that now that this anniversary has passed, a sense of proportion will return and normal service can be resumed for hopefully the next five years (that's if Twitter is still going then).
The return of The Only Way Is Essex on ITV2
The fact that it's never clear how much of ITV2's The Only Way Is Essex is real and how much is scripted only adds to the enjoyment as we follow some of the inhabitants of the county of the East Saxons. Just how stupid are the participants? TOWIE (as those in the know apparently abbreviate it) has moved reality TV, whose death everyone had proclaimed, on to a new level - no longer do we have to sit and watch the protagonists in an artificial arena, we can now watch them in their natural environment (well, as natural as Brentwood is). The first episode of the new series attracted a very respectable 900,000 viewers to the channel.
More festival announcements
As Adam & Joe sang in their seminal Middle-Class Festival Song (available to watch on YouTube), hip hip hooray, it's festival time. Reading/Leeds and Bestival have announced their line-ups, with Muse, My Chemical Romance, White Lies and The Strokes playing the former and a more eclectic mix at the Isle of Wight Bestival, ranging from The Cure and Public Enemy to, erm, Village People. Which shows that festivals are a superb opportunity for brands to engage with a wide variety of audiences.
Sky News iPad app
Free for the time being to everyone, Sky News' iPad app launched last week and, befitting a channel that has pioneered innovation, it offers a superior technological service. As well as being able to watch the Sky News channel live, viewers can "rewind" if they have missed the start of a story. Great for watching breaking news, for which Sky is a specialist, or if Kay Burley goes off on a rant or Adam Boulton has another hissy fit.
AND ONE THING WE DON'T ...
Nike/England rugby union Grand Slam promo
Oh dear. Whoever leaked Nike's planned Grand Slam victory video for England on to YouTube after the team was denied the spoils by Ireland last weekend has left both the brand and the England players looking rather red-faced. Perhaps if Toby Flood and his team-mates had spent more time practising than appearing in the promo, they might have achieved the feat. That said, does anyone know if Wales, Ireland or even Scotland had teed up similar victory videos? Onwards indeed.
