'Celebrity Big Brother' returns with 4.2 million viewers

'Celebrity Big Brother' returned with a peak audience of 4.2 million on Friday night, as the heavyweight boxing champion Evander Holyfield, the N-Dubz-star Dappy and former gameshow host Jim Davidson entered the house.

According to unofficial overnight figures, 'Celebrity Big Brother' had an average audience of 3.34 million across Channel 5, Channel 5 HD and Channel 5 +1 across its two-hour show on Friday 3 January. The show recorded a 13.9 per cent share of the TV-watching audience.

The average audience and peak audiences were just behind the first episode of 'Celebrity Big Brother in 2013, which had an average overnight audience of 3.48 million (across the three channels) and a peak audience of 4.3 million.

Supercasino.com, which is the sponsor of this series of 'Celebrity Big Brother', also sponsored the summer series. The first episode of the summer series peaked at 3.3 million.

The most-watched programme during the commercially important 9pm hour on Friday was 'Silent Witness' on BBC One, with an average audience of 6.22 million across the standard and high-definition channels, a 25.1 per cent share.

'Celebrity Big Brother' lost almost a million and a half viewers on Saturday 4 January, when it had an average audience of 1.86 million, although it was broadcast an hour later at 10pm (or 11pm on Channel 5 +1). The Saturday show achieved an 8.1 per cent share.

The most-watched programme at 10pm on Saturday night was the '10 o'clock News' on BBC One, with an average audience of 4.24 million, a 19.2 per cent share, between 10.05 and 10.25pm.

Last night, the reality show, which also features the singer Lionel Blair and the TOWIE star Sam Faiers as housemates, was back above two million, with an average audience of 2.33 million across Channel 5, Channel 5 HD and Channel 5 +1. Interestingly, the 8.5 per cent share was similar to its performance on Saturday.

The second episode of 'Sherlock' was the most-watched show between 8.30pm and 10pm, with an average of 8.84 million viewers on BBC One and BBC One HD, a 31.9 per cent share.

The first episode of this series of 'Sherlock' recorded an average of 9.18 million viewers on New Year's Day.
