NBC signs up Frasier for three more years

US Broadcaster NBC has signed up five-time Emmy-winning comedy Frasier for at least three more years, silencing speculation that it would move to another US TV network.

LONDON (Brand Republic) - US Broadcaster NBC has signed up five-time Emmy-winning comedy Frasier for at least three more years, silencing speculation that it would move to another US TV network.

NBC has reportedly been paying Paramount $5m (£3.4m) per episode for the comedy about a pompous Seattle psychologist, now in its eighth season. It says it has agreed to an increase of less than 10%.

Paramount’s studio chairman Kerry McCluggage said two other networks expressed interest in the series, one of which is thought to be Paramount’s corporate partner in Viacom, CBS.

Another hit show Buffy the Vampire Slayer is still waiting to have its network destination decided. Warner Brothers, the network on which the show runs, has hosted the show since its launch five seasons ago. However, it has yet to met Fox’s increased demands to ensure its future on WB next season.

WB currently pays about $1m (£682,000) an episode for Buffy -- this is up from the $850,000 (£580,720) it paid when it first aired the show in March 1997. Fox is thought to be asking for at least $2m (£1.4m) an episode, and as much as $2.5m (£1.7m).
