The BBC has contacted shops to set up meetings and to look at credentials. There is no intermediary involved.
The broadcaster’s search for a pool of agencies to collaborate with on a project-by-project basis follows its decision not to renew its exclusive production deal with Red Bee Media when the agreement expires in December this year.
RKCR/Y&R retained the BBC’s creative and strategic account last month after pitching against Abbott Mead Vickers BBDO, Bartle Bogle Hegarty, Saatchi & Saatchi and Wieden & Kennedy.
The WPP agency will be tasked with creating priority campaigns while the pool of agencies, likely to be smaller shops, will be called on for niche projects.
A BBC spokesman said: "We intend to offer specialist, project-based work to agencies from the wider creative community.
"We are currently meeting agencies that we may be interested in working with in the future to get a sense of their expertise. However, any work will be on a flexible or project basis and will not be on a retained basis, such as a traditional roster."
Karmarama, who created the BBC Music "God Only Knows" film last year, is expected to continue to work on some projects for the BBC. The agency dropped out of the broadcaster’s main creative pitch last year.
