BROWN, MARCUS

entirely satisfying time at the University Of Southampton (Business

Economics and Accounting).

Career highlights: My first job was working at the Nuffield Theatre in

Southampton as press and marketing officer. It taught me many things

including how to deal with creative temperaments. I've never looked back

since being told off by Martin Jarvis. (You'll remember him from the 70s

sitcom Rings on your Fingers). He stood in his Y-fronts berating me for

not persuading Theatre Royal in Bath to have more of his colour pictures

up in reception. After all, if they had displayed them they would have

sold more seats. Silly me. I then worked for Kellogg for two years in

their sales force. To cut my teeth they asked me to increase

distribution of the recently launched Pop Tarts in VG and Spar shops in

Devon. While others pitied me, I enjoyed spending two months being paid

to visit some of the most beautiful villages in this country. On 23 May

1994, I joined Saatchi & Saatchi. Starting as a graduate trainee, I

worked my way up to become a board account director, working on Head &

Shoulders, Ariel, Visa International, BBC Radio, the National Lottery

and the NSPCC; 1998, they offered me the job of new business director.

It was clearly a high-profile job and success or failure would be for

all to see. Fortunately, we won lots of business including Sony across

Europe, Monster.com, Mr Kipling, Telewest and Bisto; Moved to RKCR/Y&R

in September 2000. While partner, business development, the agency won

the global accounts for Land Rover and Lego, Lloyds TSB, COI

Communications New Deal, Carlsberg and Powergen.

Proudest achievements: Helping the NSPCC to launch its 'full stop'

campaign. My involvement was not merely delivering communications - we

helped the NSPCC to redefine its mission and its role in society as well

as bringing about cultural change within the Society. It took several

years to persuade the NSPCC board of trustees that a campaign to end all

cruelty to all children was indeed the correct approach. I wrote a

30-year plan that would start to bring about changes in legislation that

would further protect children. Much of the momentum behind the

legislative changes against smacking can be traced back to the NSPCC's

campaign.

Groundwork Camden and Islington (Groundwork is the UK's largest urban

regeneration organisation that helps build sustainable communities
