Sky Television has announced a pounds 1 million Christmas promotion to celebrate the five millionth Sky customer in the UK. Telegraph Newspapers has signed up the marketing independent, Cobbe
Smith Terris, to help identify and realise new revenue streams. From
January 1996, the Telegraph will offer advertisers the opportunity to
extend their communication via screen savers downloadable from the
Electronic Telegraph. For an additional premium, the Telegraph will
produce and feature the client’s advertising screen saver for a week on
Emap has sold its regional newspapers in Kent to the Adscene Group for
pounds 9.85 million. The package comprises 13 paid-for weekly titles,
including the Medway News, Thanet Gazette, East Kent Gazette and
Folkestone and Dover Herald Express. The titles have a total circulation
of 100,000 copies and contributed pounds 427,000 to Emap’s 1994/95
profits on sales of pounds 5.65 million.
The National Magazine Company has appointed Alison Pylkkanen as editor
of She magazine. Pylkkanen, who was deputy editor of Good Housekeeping,
replaces Linda Kelsey who stepped down last week due to ill-health. Tara
Barker, deputy editor of Company magazine, replaces Pylkkanen at Good
The Newspaper Society has set up a Broadcasting Bill unit to spearhead
the association’s lobbying of the Government’s plans for regulating
media ownership. It will provide a contact point for peers, MPs,
regional publishers and the media during the passage of the bill. The
unit will be headed by David Newell, the Society’s deputy director.
Telephone lines installed by cable operators have exceeded cable TV
connections for the first time, according to the Independent Television
Commission. In the last quarter, cable telephone lines reached 1.2
million, compared with 1.1 million cable TV subscribers.
Godfrey Mann, the chairman of TMD Carat, has resigned. Mann, who has
been with TMD since 1973 and was one of the original partners when the
agency went to the Unlisted Securities Market in 1985, has decided to
retire from full-time involvement with the company. He will continue as
a consultant for select clients.
Carling has launched Carling Net, the official Internet site of the
Carling Premiership (www.fa-carling.com). Fans following matches on the
Carling Net will receive pre-match reports, instant goal flashes, half-
and full-time results plus pictures straight from the game.
Videotron, London’s largest cable company, together with Carlton
Television and London Weekend Television, has relaunched the interactive
version of its flagship London News Network programmes, London Tonight
and After Five. The 87,000 London homes with Videotron’s interactive
delivery system, Videoway, will benefit from a new headline service on
the leading news stories of the day.
Barclaycard is to sponsor In Search of James Bond with Jonathan Ross,
the first one-off special ITV network programme to attract sponsorship.

The Radio Authority has advertised its sixth regional licence for an FM
licence covering most of West Yorkshire, South Yorkshire and Humberside.
This is the largest local radio licence outside London and comprises at
least three million adults.
