NEWS: Y&R wins top BTAA prize with Carl in New York commercial

Young and Rubicam’s ad, ‘Carl in New York’, for Pirelli, was voted best commercial of the year at the British Television Advertising Awards on Wednesday night (13 March). It shared top honours with Abbott Mead Vickers BBDO, whose Volvo ‘twister’ ad won the Kodak award for best crafted commercial and a gold in the cars category.

Young and Rubicam’s ad, ‘Carl in New York’, for Pirelli, was voted best

commercial of the year at the British Television Advertising Awards on

Wednesday night (13 March). It shared top honours with Abbott Mead

Vickers BBDO, whose Volvo ‘twister’ ad won the Kodak award for best

crafted commercial and a gold in the cars category.



The occasion, which also marked the 21st anniversary of the awards, was

held at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel. For the second year running,

Bartle Bogle Hegarty was voted the agency of the year, while the Paul

Weiland Film Company netted the production company of the year title for

the third successive year.



BBH’s ‘washroom’ commercial for Levi’s gained gold awards in both the

European and clothing categories, while ‘planet’ was nominated for a

silver and bronze in the clothing and post-production categories

respectively. The three commercials, ‘washroom’, ‘planet’ and ‘clayman’,

won a silver in the series category, while in addition BBH picked up

awards for Haagen-Dazs, Audi, Polaroid and NatWest.



Tim Delaney, the creative director and chairman of Leagas Delaney and

chairman of this year’s judging panel, commented that the jury saw 1,218

ads and that the reel of this year’s shortlist amounted to more than two

hours.



‘Take the craft skills involved,’ he said. ‘These are now so honed that

the editing of feature films looks leaden by comparison. Now that we

have left jukebox advertising behind, music is integral and makes a real

contribution to the emotional appeal of a spot rather then simply being

memorable. And direction is almost always inventive, sometimes plain

dazzling.


‘We should cherish this expertise and enjoy the fact that from

conception through to the editing and sound suites of Soho, we have

talented people in this industry.’



Other gold winners included GGT’s Holsten Pils ‘drink drive’ commercial

in the alcoholic drinks section, BMP DDB Needham’s ad for Salt ‘n’

Lineker crisps in the confectionery and snacks category, D’Arcy Masius

Benton and Bowles’ ‘Dave’ ad in public service advertising, with the

series gold award going to BMP’s low-budget campaign for Volkswagen

dealerships.
