Vauxhall is using the up-and-coming comic, Sean Mayo, in its first
pounds 3 million campaign for the Vectra SRi through Lowe
Mayo - Time Out’s Comedian of the Year 1997 and a newcomer to
advertising - stars in two tongue-in-cheek films which play on the car’s
reputation for cornering. It is the first time Lowes has created TV ads
for the car, which is a sporty version of the main Vectra model.
In the first ad, ’Switzerland’, Mayo appears in a Swiss meadow
explaining the country’s three main contributions to mankind: ’The
fondue set. The cuckoo clock. And fabulous corners.’ He then says there
are two ways to take a corner - in a sofa or in the Vectra.
The film ends with an aerial view of Mayo driving around a
mini-roundabout in Worcestershire, as he explains: ’Of course, you don’t
have to go all the way to Switzerland to get great corners.’
The second ad, ’Belgium’, continues the theme with Mayo warning: ’Don’t
ever, ever come to Belgium’ since ’the rivers are straight, the roads
are straight. Even the corners are straight.’
The ads were written and art directed by Charles Inge and directed by
John Lloyd at Spectre. The campaign broke on Wednesday and will run for
six weeks, with media buying by Western International Media.
