The huge surge in home ownership of PCs and gaming consoles has
created fertile ground for consumer magazine groups over the past few
Ten years ago, this sector was served by just one title, What PC?. There
are now more than 25 PC and web magazines and, according to the
January-June ABCs, the sector has grown by 48 per cent annually.
Even the men’s lifestyle market, which has grown more than 600 per cent
since 1990, can’t compare with the whopping 3,840 per cent growth in
sales created by the adoption of the PC and internet.
A similar trend has been emerging in the PC and console gaming market,
where the huge success of Sony PlayStation has spawned a host of
Between July 1996 and 1997, sales in this sector increased by 190 per
cent. In the July-December 1999 ABC , growth dropped to just over 15 per
cent. According to the most recent data, PC and games console titles are
in decline - sales fell by 5.3 per cent year on year.
The console titles are the lifeblood of the sector and, as old machines
become outdated and new ones are released, this market experiences
periods of transition.
This transition is happening now, so it is no surprise that there has
been a downturn in consumer magazine sales.
Nintendo, for example, has almost had its day - accordingly, every
Nintendo title bar new entrant Nintendo World, experienced a decline.
PlayStation is poised to be superseded by PlayStation II, and this is
mirrored by Official PlayStation Magazine losing 85,000 copies year on
The gaming sector was only saved from a steeper decline by titles
catering for Sega’s new Dreamcast. Four Dreamcast titles boosted the
market’s sales by more than 100,000 copies.
While the gaming magazine market is in a lull, Dreamcast, PlayStation II
and Nintendo’s mysterious Dolphin/StarCube console should all breathe
new life into the sector.
