MPs slam ASA over misleading ads for cosmetic treatment

The Advertising Standards Authority has come under renewed fire after MPs attacked the organisation for failing to stamp out misleading ads for cosmetic surgery.

after MPs attacked the organisation for failing to stamp out misleading

ads for cosmetic surgery.



In a Commons debate on the issue, the strongest criticism came from Dr

Peter Brand, a qualified surgeon and Liberal Democrat spokesman on

health, who called for a wide-ranging inquiry into the ASA’s

performance.



Brand said the ASA might as well be disbanded if it could not do its job

properly.



Labour MP Ann Clywd said: ’So much of the advertising is totally

misleading because it does not give the impression that there is any

danger in carrying out these procedures.’



The ASA argues that it is being unfairly blamed over problems in

regulating the private health sector, and insists it does not have the

expertise to make judgments about whether clinics are qualified to carry

out cosmetic surgery.
