- Pearson has moved to extend its reach in Asia by embarking on a 50:50 joint venture with Hong Kong new media tycoon Richard Li.

The UK media group, which owns The Financial Times, will provide content for Li's Pacific Century Cyber Works in return for a greater presence in the region.

The joint venture will be centred around PCCW's broadband internet and TV service Network of the World. Pearson will provide the editorial content for the network's planned range of interactive learning channels and online educational services.

The alliance follows Pearson's announcement last week of a three-year deal to develop its online Learning Network in association with America Online. The educational content to be developed for Li is likely to run along similar lines to the Learning Network material, which is based strongly on Pearson's textbook publishing activities.
