Diary: Burnett gobbles up top spot in Turkeys of the Year poll
campaignlive.co.uk, Friday, 08 December 2006 12:00AM
The senior management team at Leo Burnett may find their Christmas dinners leaving a rather nasty taste in their mouths this year, having grabbed top spot on the list of shame for creating the most Turkeys of the year. Burnett created a whopping four gobblers.
There will also be some Christmas indigestion for Abbott Mead Vickers BBDO, Bartle Bogle Hegarty, JWT and Grey, who all finished on three Turkeys each.
Mother is likely to enjoy its festive feasting, having stormed the Picks with five.
As well as creating four stinkers, Leo Burnett was also responsible for an ad that very nearly pipped VCCP's Coke Zero work to the dubious honour of being voted Turkey of the Year.
This was the Frosties work, with the irritating song, appalling lyrics and oddly dancing kid.
Although it wasn't just the agencies with the most Turkeys that dredged the depths of shamefully bad advertising this year, there was an embarrassment of riches when pulling together contenders for Turkey of the Year. This list of horror included Ogilvy Advertising's effort for Ford Fiesta, where the car stops a wedding by beeping its horn, as well as AMV's RAC work (the man with the rocket boots). There was also BBH's super cringeworthy (and slightly racist) effort for Woolwich, where two white people speak to an airport immigration officer with Jamaican accents because they've been on a 15-year honeymoon.
Mother put in most of its good work in the first half of the year with four Picks, but added a fifth with its Boots Christmas ad. WCRS did make a bid to keep up by adding another Pick (for 3) in the second half of 2006, but eventually came up just a bit short.
Lowe London (three) and BBH (two) missed a trick by failing to create any stand-out work in the second half of the year.
