Personal mantra: One step back
8.10am After a lacklustre day at work yesterday, I arrive at the office confident of great progress today. In particular, I'm keen to change my home broadband provider.
8.15am I've read that standing up while on the phone makes you dynamic and powerful. I notice Moray MacLennan always does it. I decide to give it a try.
8.45am It has no effect. Cut off twice by a call centre in India. Sit down instead and push peanuts/envelopes. Progress is negligible.
9.00am Richard Alford (with whom I office share) has started singing. He sings pretty much all day. Most days. Carrie Hindmarsh (who also shares the office) often joins in. You can imagine what fun it is.
10.30am Run a session with our new graduate trainees on pitching. Feel important and knowledgeable. Am briefly energised by their youthful optimism.
12.00pm Catch-up with Moray and Tim Duffy. They remind me that new business is of paramount importance in the current climate and ask me what I've achieved recently. Tell them about my recent Ocado delivery.
12.30pm Pre-lunch slump.
12.45pm Tuck into a marvellous pie from Eat while on hold to the broadband people. Am grateful for my God-given ability to multi-task - it makes me so productive.
1.00pm As I am cut off for the third time, I briefly wonder whether I should be lunching a new-business prospect in a swanky restaurant ... quickly post-rationalise my desk-bound lunch as a canny recessionary tactic. Lucky M&C Saatchi to have such a frugal marketing director.
1.15pm Work with Tim on a presentation for a new-business meeting.
4.00pm Tea with Kerry Glazer. Kerry used to be a nurse so is good at caring for people with real problems, so I tell her mine. She's really understanding about the broadband issue. Feel much better.
5.00pm Back at work. Richard's still singing. He's slightly subdued and has a fresh bruise on the side of his head. Notice Carrie isn't singing with him. How interesting.
5.30pm Final push on the broadband. Speak to a real person who gives me a different number to call tomorrow. Progress at last.
6.30pm Head home with the warm glow of a job well done.
