Close-Up: 24 hours with ... John McLoughlin, Media Contacts
campaignlive.co.uk, Friday, 05 December 2008 12:00AM
Name: John McLoughlin
Job: Managing director, Media Contacts
Professional mission: Get the best out of those around me
Personal mantra: Do unto others as you would have done to yourself
5.45am With metronomic precision, woken by daughter, Issy.
6.00am Say goodbye to Issy, fail to wake her twin sister, Kitty, who's snoring away (mother's side thing, obviously).
6.29am Jump on train, check diary, assume Homer Simpson-esque sleeping position until we get to London.
8.00am Weekly meeting with Mark Craze. The thing about Mark is it sometimes takes a while to tease out of him what he really needs from you ...
10.30am Catch up with our head of search, Tharien. A shy and retiring South African. For some reason, I find myself standing to attention as she talks to/lectures me. Agree to send her off to Hyderabad to check on our Media Contacts outsource team, buying one week of peace and quiet.
11.30am Discuss plans for expansion of our mobile offering, Mobext. With us for five months, they are already doing work for eight of our clients, with more on the horizon for new year. I like them ... one of them's older than me!
12.00pm Meeting with National Express client. After an hour in the same room as account director Charlotte, the client and myself are suffering the effects of tinnitus.
1.00pm Pret versus Eat versus Paul's ... paying lip service to health regime, find myself in some salad bar (that's a lie).
2.30pm Meeting with Paul Frampton, the head of digital and one of Essex's finest. Recovering from the shock of his latest sartorial statement. How can one dressed like a hoodie be so talented?
4.00pm Copy and paste a host of new ideas into UK 2009 business plan - ah, the beauty of digital.
4.30pm A blur of waving arms and a cardigan better suited to a pensioner heralds the arrival of Pete Bennett, the head of client services at MPG.
5.00pm Conference call with Anthony Rhind, Media Contacts' chief strategy officer, presently in the US and a man not given to precis. I am finally released when the battery on my mobile runs out.
6.30pm Paul and I interview someone with 18 months' digital experience who earnestly puts their case for a £50k salary ... give up, go home.
