What does it do? Produces contract magazines for the likes of
Virgin, Debenhams, Waitrose and Ikea. Also publishes an eclectic mix of
consumer magazines, including Wisden’s Cricket Monthly, Gardens
Illustrated, Viz, Bizarre, Fortean Times and the new women’s style
Good office? Nice new one in London W10. Handy for Portobello Road but
the nearest tube station is Latimer Road on the Hammersmith and City
Facilities include a licensed staff restaurant (Will, the cook, is John
Brown’s nephew and the female staff think he’s dishy) and a cinema that
occasionally shows first-run films such as Notting Hill.
What’s it like? Easy going and relaxed. The company and its work
environment are imbued with the personality of its chairman. Dress is
casual and staff are encouraged to bring their dogs to work. The
restaurant turns into a bar with a pool table and sound system in the
evening. The lack of local watering holes makes it very popular.
Alternatively, it’s a ten minute walk to the North Pole or Ruby in the
Dust. The Academy, where top chefs train, is good for client lunches,
but there isn’t much shopping action in the immediate vicinity.
What about perks? The annual sports day followed by a disco on a boat is
a laugh and there is also a weekend trip to Le Touquet.
A masseuse visits once a week (we are assured it’s respectable) and
you’ll find the chairman at the inhouse yoga and stretching classes.
