HOW TO GET AHEAD: WHAT IT’S LIKE TO WORK FOR ... JOHN BROWN PUBLISHING - This enlightened workplace doubles up as a top quality leisure centre and cinema

What does it do? Produces contract magazines for the likes of Virgin, Debenhams, Waitrose and Ikea. Also publishes an eclectic mix of consumer magazines, including Wisden’s Cricket Monthly, Gardens Illustrated, Viz, Bizarre, Fortean Times and the new women’s style glossy Bare.

Good office? Nice new one in London W10. Handy for Portobello Road but

the nearest tube station is Latimer Road on the Hammersmith and City

line.

Facilities include a licensed staff restaurant (Will, the cook, is John

Brown’s nephew and the female staff think he’s dishy) and a cinema that

occasionally shows first-run films such as Notting Hill.

What’s it like? Easy going and relaxed. The company and its work

environment are imbued with the personality of its chairman. Dress is

casual and staff are encouraged to bring their dogs to work. The

restaurant turns into a bar with a pool table and sound system in the

evening. The lack of local watering holes makes it very popular.

Alternatively, it’s a ten minute walk to the North Pole or Ruby in the

Dust. The Academy, where top chefs train, is good for client lunches,

but there isn’t much shopping action in the immediate vicinity.

What about perks? The annual sports day followed by a disco on a boat is

a laugh and there is also a weekend trip to Le Touquet.

A masseuse visits once a week (we are assured it’s respectable) and

you’ll find the chairman at the inhouse yoga and stretching classes.

There are also softball and five-a-side football teams (male and female)

and a cricket team ’except they never seem to get a match off the

ground’.

Is it good at training? A training package for all levels of sales using

external consultants will be unveiled shortly.

How does it recruit? Through consultants and by word of mouth.

How do you get ahead? ’Get on with it, use your initiative and hit your

targets. Then again, it’s so unpolitical I really wouldn’t know.’
