How To Get Ahead: What It’s Like To Work For ... VNU - VNU’s Soho office houses a hard-working sales team of heavy-drinking hedonists

What does it do? It produces consumer and business magazines, mainly in the IT and financial sectors. And, of course, it’s involved in new media. The ad sales teams work across traditional and online products.

Good office? The big red-brick building in Soho’s Broadwick Street was

once rather unfairly christened ’the Lubyanka’, after the old KGB

headquarters.

But VNU assures us it has been revamped and is now ’modern and open

plan’.

Besides, you read that word ’Soho’, right? So sod the decor, you’re in

party central.

What’s it like? VNU tells us it attracts ’vibrant, outgoing people who

are committed to working hard while having a good time’. Success is

rewarded regardless of length of service. The average age is 27 and

there’s plenty of after-hours drinking. The annual party involves

’copious amounts of food and alcohol’. Kensington Roof Gardens had the

pleasure of their company last year.

What about perks? Free life assurance, a pension scheme, subsidised

sports club membership, an interest-free season-ticket loan and 26 days’

holiday a year. More experienced account handlers get cars, laptops and

mobile phones. Ad sales people are encouraged to entertain their

clients, so parties, lunches and sports events are all up for grabs.

Is it good at training? New employees receive a full induction

programme, plus product/market and skills training appropriate to their

ability. There are also a number of courses, in everything from

negotiation to developing business strategy and marketing.

How does it recruit? You’ll need sales experience, but not necessarily

in media. VNU likes to hire people from a variety of backgrounds as it

’ensures new ideas and ways of working enter the building’.

How do you get ahead? You have to be enterprising, intelligent and

creative.

And you need to know how to have a good time.
