Almap BBDO scoops top agency prize at Wave Festival

RIO - Almap BBDO has been named agency of the year at the inaugural Wave Festival in Rio de Janeiro.

The Sao Paulo-based agency is a renowned creative powerhouse in Brazil and one of the country's biggest agencies.

It secured the top prize for the 92 points it amalgamated in bronze, silver and gold awards won at the festival - putting it a full 10 points ahead of the pack, despite not bagging any Grand Prix.

F/Nazca Saatchi and Saatchi and DM9DDB, also from Sao Paulo, were its nearest competitors.

Jose Carlos Salles Neto, the president of Wave organisers Grupo M & M, said he was happy to award an agency with such creative strength. But "I am also happy that other countries won prizes in other categories."

Brazil is known for its digital expertise, yet a Mexican agency took that Grand Prix, he noted.
Salles Neto said the Copacabana Palace Hotel has already been booked for Wave next year (May 6-8) when his hopes are for 800 delegates.

He upgraded the official delegate count of 200 given earlier in the week, claiming 513 attended this year.

He claims Wave will be "the Cannes for Latin America" in two to three years.

The gala dinner at which the agency award was announced seemed barely marred by the fact that no-one from the agency was there to accept it. Marcello Serpa, creative director of Almap BBDO, was a scheduled speaker but had been prevented from attending by urgent Pepsi-Cola business.

But, in typical Brazilian fashion, the party hardly noticed and danced the night away to the well-known Samba singer Teresa Cristina.
