An AMV BBDO advertising supplement: O&M’s Baulk moves to Abbott Mead

Michael Baulk, managing director of Ogilvy & Mather, is moving to Abbott

Mead Vickers SMS as managing director and chief executive after 17 years

with O&M, the last six as managing director. There, along with the

chairman, Peter Warren, he was credited with transforming the image and

the financial fortunes of the agency.

He will be succeeded at O&M by his deputy managing director, Mike Walsh,

who was appointed to the position only last month (Campaign, 23 May) in

a move that was clearly paving the way for this week’s promotion.

Baulk’s impending move may prove to have taken the agency one step

further away from retaining the pounds 4 million Woolwich building

society advertising account, which is under review.

Baulk, 42, has been in talks with Abbott Mead since February. His move

is designed to take the agency into the next stage of its development,

following its successful flotation at the end of last year.

Baulk would not discuss the terms of his contract with Abbott Mead,

although it is clear that he will take a considerable shareholding when

he takes up his new job at the agency in September.

Baulk stressed he was not unhappy at O&M, and that its succession policy

meant that he could be replaced without fuss. In any case, thanks to the

stake owned in AMV by the O&M subsidiary, Scali McCabe Sloves, the two

agencies were loosely connected.

The agency’s managing director, Peter Mead, will become joint chairman

with David Abbott, leaving Baulk to run the agency.

Baulk, described in Campaign in 1986 as ’young, energetic and a

streetfighter’, renewed his relationship with Warren in 1991 when the

latter joined AMV in a top European role.
