AMV and Zenith retain their hold on top spots

Abbott Mead Vickers BBDO and Zenith Media have held on convincingly to their top spots in the latest AC Nielsen MMS top 30 rankings.

Abbott Mead Vickers BBDO and Zenith Media have held on convincingly

to their top spots in the latest AC Nielsen MMS top 30 rankings.

In the 12 months to the end of March 2000, Zenith’s billings were up

13.55 per cent to pounds 614.94 million, while AMV’s were up 2.7 per

cent to pounds 398.61 million.

In the creative table, St Luke’s has jumped six places to 21st after

netting a massive 78.11 per cent increase in billings. Huge spends from

the Government and Sky TV are nudging the agency, which started life as

a rebel hotshop, towards the top 20.

HHCL & Partners and WCRS - two other medium-sized agencies - have also

enjoyed dramatic success over the past year, with percentage increases

of 50.78 and 27.5 respectively.

BMP DDB has edged up to third place from fifth with an impressive 14.83

per cent increase in billings, despite the loss of Sony to Saatchi &

Saatchi last year.

Among the media agencies, there were an even greater number of dramatic

rises. BJK&E had a 73.69 per cent hike in billings to gain a coveted

place in the top 20 as a result of wins from clients including

Mercedes-Benz and FT.com.

Mark Patterson, the managing director of BJK&E, explained: ’There is a

good team spirit here and a sense of purpose. We have been able to

expand our board to five people and five heads are far better than two.

Size is certainly a bonus when you are small.’

Other media companies that also did well include newcomer Starcom

Motive, which went up from 11th to fifth following its merger, with a

billings increase of 44.46 per cent to pounds 412.63 million. Walker

Media also continued its meteoric rise with a 72 per cent hike to pounds

148.69 million, despite failing to improve on last year’s position at

17th.

The 1999/2000 agencies that have taken a tumble include Ogilvy & Mather,

which dropped from seventh to 11th as the agency’s Ford billings slipped

away completely. Saatchis has been knocked out of the top three to

number six and Euro RSCG Wnek Gosper is now at 16 from 12. Leagas

Delaney lost 28.5 per cent of its billings.

In the media league, Universal McCann made the same slip as Saatchis in

the creative league - from three to six - even though both agencies are

still increasing their billings.

MindShare stumbled into seventh place from fourth, one reason why WPP

might consider teasing out the media interests of the newly acquired

Young & Rubicam from Media Planning Group to merge with MindShare and

bolster WPP’s overall media offering.
