The Annual 2004: The 10 Biggest petrolheads

1. Michael Baulk, group chairman and chief executive, AMV Group

If there is one car that is the universal symbol of the successful adman about town, it's got to be the red Ferrari. And if there's one man in adland synonymous with red Ferraris, it is Baulk, who has been driving them for more than 20 years. He once brought Marylebone Road to a standstill by parking his wheels beneath a smoke alarm in the AMV car park.

2. Nick Hurrell, chairman, M&C Saatchi Europe

While Hurrell likes his sports cars, his PA assures us that he's not flashy about it. Yes, he owns a Ferrari (an F1 360 Medina) but, no, it's not red, it's blue. And just to prove he's not flashy, Hurrell only ever refers to it as the F-car. And when he wants to relax, Hurrell turns to either his Mercedes or his Porsche four-wheel drive for comfort.

3. Colin Gottlieb, chief executive, OMD Europe

Rumour had it that Colin Gottlieb owned several Ferraris, which he kept in a stable. We investigated and found that he in fact owns just two (neither of which is kept in a stable). But Gottlieb says this doesn't make him a poseur and is at pains to point out that neither of his cars is red - one is blue and the other is silver.

4. Leslie Butterfield, managing partner, The Ingram Partnership

Butterfield is a bit of an F1 enthusiast, and when he's not watching the Schumachers battling it out, he's probably out racing his mates along Southend seafront, for all we know. Butterfield owns the customary Ferrari, this time a yellow convertible with black leather interior. He's also got a deep-red Alfa Romeo.

5. Steve Allan, group chief executive, MediaCom

Allan and his wife share a Porsche 9/11 and a top-of- the-range Aston Martin. However, these are just for weekends. From Monday to Friday, Allan gets to work via a chauffeur-driven Range Rover.

6. Jim Kelly, founding partner, Rainey Kelly Campbell Roalfe/Y&R

Kelly is another Grand Prix fanatic, but he doesn't restrict himself to watching it on TV. His pride and joy is a bright yellow Porsche Carrera RS, a lightweight model, which he uses for track racing. Kelly's "Yellow Peril" is one of only 1,000 ever made. When not track racing, Kelly reverts to his more sober Porsche Carrera 4.

7. David Pattison, worldwide chief executive, PHD

Pattison insists that it's the driving experience that does it for him and not the satisfaction of having something shiny and flash in his lock-up. A former owner of TVRs, BMWs, Porsches and two black Ferraris, Pattison has given it all up since relocating to the city. For the past few months, he's attempted to settle down to life with an Audi ... but old habits die hard. It won't be long before he's back behind the wheel of a sports car.

8. Paul Grubb, founding partner, DFGW

Although Grubb is without wheels at the moment, he's been a biker for more than 20 years and has owned 13 in his time. Grubb favours the small, speedy Japanese variety and is the co-founder of Track Days - a scheme that enables fellow petrolheads to zip around a professional circuit, out of harm's way.

9. Jim Marshall, chairman, Starcom UK

Like Grubb, Marshall is a bit of a biker. Every now and then he dons the leathers and bombs to work on his power bike. There's an image.

10. Bill Muirhead, founding partner, M&C Saatchi

Muirhead is another petrolhead. But he doesn't like to talk about it. Hence the brevity of this entry.
