The ads will go on air in New South Wales and feature June Burns, a 59 year old mother of four from Queensland, who is terminally ill with cancer of the bladder.

The ads were created by Ammirati Puris Lintas Sydney, and its national creative director Marc Schattner.

The ad shows Burns lying in bed speaking to the camera. She tells viewers: "If I was a dog, by now the RSPCA would be on to my husband for cruelty and would have me put down straight away…I'd like to die with dignity".

The ads were commissioned by the New South Wales Branch of the Voluntary Euthanasia Society and part-funded by APL.

The decision to air the ads was condemned by the Right to Life Association as a stunt.

However, the Federation of Australian Commercial Television said that the ads called for a change in the law rather than encouraging suicide.
