Barrett Cernis has hired the Cannes double gold-winning writer Gideon Todes as part of its efforts to bolster its creative pedigree.

Todes joins next month after a four-year stint at Abbott Mead Vickers BBDO, where he and his art director, Mike Harris, struck gold twice at Cannes with their work for The Economist.

'I've had a stable period at AMV but there comes a time when you want to push the peanut forward,' he said.

Todes, 35, will work initially with Ray Barrett, the agency's creative partner, while an art director is found for him. 'Gideon is a good hiring for us because of what it says about our ambition,' Barrett said. 'It also allows him more room for manoeuvre.'

Todes will work across the agency's accounts, which include Britax child safety products, the Sofa Workshop chain and the London Symphony Orchestra.

Todes began work at FCB in 1988 and his career has since included spells at Waldron Allen Henry & Thompson, Leagas Shafron Davis, Saatchi & Saatchi and the Bates agency in Hong Kong.
