In our 19 December issue we printed a letter which purported to be

from Barry Stephenson, head of TV at Bates Dorland.

The letter was a hoax.

We deeply regret our failure to check its authenticity, particularly

since the views expressed were completely at odds with Stephenson’s own,

and the equal opportunity recruitment, training and promotion policy of

Bates Dorland’s TV department.

We apologise unreservedly for any damage that may have been caused,

particularly to the reputation of Bates Dorland’s TV department.
