The art director Barwood replaces Hicklin Slade's former joint creative directors, Malcolm Caldwell and Adam Haywood, who left the agency last month to join Inferno.
In his new role, Barwood will be responsible for growing the department, developing client relationships and working on new business.
Barwood spent a decade at TMW, becoming the joint creative director in 2004. In this role, he worked on its British Airways, Nissan, Diageo and Royal Air Force clients.
He won a number of awards including a D&AD Pencil for his "blank page" work for the RAF in 2002 and a gold Lion at Cannes in 2004 for the Guinness CRM programme.
Hicklin Slade's planning partner, Mark Runacus, said: "Andy's a hugely talented art director, a leader, and has a history of developing strong client relationships."
