BBC in content first deal with Yahoo

The BBC will provide national and international, political, technology, science, business and sport news.

No money will change hands as part of the deal and to ensure the BBC meets its public service remit banner ads will not be displayed on the pages carrying BBC content.

While adverts will be only a click away from BBC pages this meets the BBC's charter that says the pubic service broadcaster can not be associated with advertising.

The deal could extend the reach of BBC News Online, which already the UK's leading news site. The BBC said it will monitor how many people come to its site after viewing its content on Yahoo!.

The BBC achieves around 75 million audited page impressions per month, but Yahoo's audience is almost triple this at more than 210 million page impressions a month.

According to Richard Deverell, head of New Media at BBC News: "UK licence fee payers have already paid for the BBC News Online service, and our objective is to make it available to as many eyeballs as possible."

The BBC is thought to be considering similar deals with other leading online players.
