The fund will be controlled by BBC Worldwide, the corporation's commercial wing. One of the first films the fund is backing is Love, Honour and Obey, which will star Denise Van Outen, the former Big Breakfast host, alongside Notting Hill's Rhys Ifan and Jude Law.

Other projects include a planned Dr Who film franchise. The first Dr Who movie is expected to go into production late next year.
