BMP Optimum has poached Jonathan Gillespie from Virgin Radio to

become its first head of radio as it seeks to beef up its strategic

planning and buying.

Gillespie, who was an account manager at Virgin, joins BMP Optimum at

the end of the month and will work with another radio specialist, who

has yet to be appointed, as the agency sets up a separate radio

unit.

Before joining Virgin, Gillespie worked at the Radio Advertising Bureau

for two years as a strategic planner.

Tim McCloskey, deputy managing director of BMP Optimum, said the move

represents a more serious approach to radio. ’We are looking to place

more of our money in the radio market, and to do that we need a more

dedicated resource to understand how the radio business works,’ he

said.

He added that as the radio industry moves towards proprietary selling,

with radio stations setting up their own sales houses, it was important

to take advantage of better levels of service and representation within

the radio industry. He is keen to extend radio’s 3 per cent share of BMP

Optimum’s business to 5 per cent.

Gillespie, who will join BMP by the end of the month, said: ’My aim is

to persuade clients to have a good look at a medium that is worthwhile.’

What better way to kick off Campaign's relaunch than with another think piece on the current failings of our industry, written by an embittered, pretentious creative who misses "the way things used to be"...
