BMP Optimum has poached Jonathan Gillespie from Virgin Radio to
become its first head of radio as it seeks to beef up its strategic
planning and buying.
Gillespie, who was an account manager at Virgin, joins BMP Optimum at
the end of the month and will work with another radio specialist, who
has yet to be appointed, as the agency sets up a separate radio
Before joining Virgin, Gillespie worked at the Radio Advertising Bureau
for two years as a strategic planner.
Tim McCloskey, deputy managing director of BMP Optimum, said the move
represents a more serious approach to radio. ’We are looking to place
more of our money in the radio market, and to do that we need a more
dedicated resource to understand how the radio business works,’ he
He added that as the radio industry moves towards proprietary selling,
with radio stations setting up their own sales houses, it was important
to take advantage of better levels of service and representation within
the radio industry. He is keen to extend radio’s 3 per cent share of BMP
Optimum’s business to 5 per cent.
Gillespie, who will join BMP by the end of the month, said: ’My aim is
to persuade clients to have a good look at a medium that is worthwhile.’
