BP plays its cards for England

- Glenn Hoddle, David Beckham, Dion Dublin and other members of the 1998 England World Cup team will feature on a set of 25 traditional collectors cards as part of a campaign by BP to highlight its role as "the official fuel of Team England."

The cards feature players and the coach on the front, with their vital football statistics on the reverse. For every £10 spent at BP, customers will get a free card to add to their collection. Or a superior wash will earn them three cards or a collector's book. As with the traditional collectors cards of previous decades the book will be filled with nuggets of football information.

The concept was introduced to BP by the director of agency Creative Football Dave Bridges, who agreed licensing arrangements with the Football Association. The cards are designed to appeal to adults as well as children and Bridges brought in illustrator Jake Rickwood to design caricatures which would have a wide appeal.

BP is also offering customers the chance to win a pair of tickets to a top England international or one of 25 signed shirts, plus thousands of mini footballs. BP's computers will scan customers' Argos Premier Points cards and a random computer selection will decide the winners.

Bridges worked with BP local promotions manager Richard Horncastle on the project. BP's recently appointed below the line agency Claydon Heeley worked on some point of sale material. The card offer launches this week with the prize offers kicking off at the end of April.
