Brass Tacks brings in Marc Backwell to improve title design

AMD Brass Tacks, the publishing company owned by Chime Communications, has appointed a head of creative to help grow the business.

Marc Backwell, 34, joins from his role as the creative director of the Melbourne-based publisher Hardie Grant.

Backwell's arrival signals Brass Tack's intention to place greater emphasis on the design and innovation of its titles. In a previous role at Cedar Communications, he won the APA Designer of the Year award for his work on British Airways' High Life.

Brass Tacks is strengthening its senior team following recent contract wins including the Securicor magazine, a title targeting business readers. It also publishes titles for Royal Mail, Littlewoods, Somerfield and Trade Partners UK.

Craig Waller, Brass Tacks' chief executive, said: "Marc is a great designer and went to Australia to get a broader experience of running a studio. He was fired up by the opportunity to join a company doing something innovative."

Backwell joins as Brass Tacks attempts to expand its range of clients, particularly in the consumer publishing field. He will work with a senior team led by Waller that includes the editorial director Maureen Rice and the editor-in-chief Matthew Cowen.
