- Telewest, the country's second largest cable group, and ONdigital, the terrestrial digital television service, are thought to be in preliminary talks about a potential merger.

At a cable industry conference last week Adam Singer, chief executive of Telewest, denied speculation of a merger between the company and rival ntl but is thought to have spoken to ONdigital's chief executive, Stuart Prebble, about joining forces.

ONdigital, controlled by Granada Media and Carlton Communications, has postponed its desires of flotation until next year. Although it is unclear if the talks will progress, the main advantage would come from the combination of the two services' subscriber bases.
