- British Sky Broadcasting is close to allowing subscribers to its soon to be launched digital service to buy premium sports and films channels without having to purchase a monthly subscription package to more than 30 basic channels, according to a report in the Financial Times today.

The move reflects a weakening in the company's insistence that all subscribers had to buy the basic package of channels and reflects the biggest change in the station's strategy since Mark Booth became chief executive last year.

Although BSkyB will still go ahead and offer a big basic package of at least 50 channels to subscribers to its new 200 channel digital service, it will allow customers to purchase mini tiers of channels also.

Analysts say the mini tier packages are likely to be charged at between £6 and £7.99 a month if bought separately and would be similar to channel packages offered by cable companies.
