BSkyB has acquired a 5 percent stake in the independent sports net
The companies have signed a commercial agreement to share strategic
operations, including the distribution of content to any site belonging
to both organisations.
BSkyB hopes to pull in a host of advertisers, capitalising on Sportal’s
partnerships with top sports franchises.
Sky Sports online and Sportal are to run advertising and promotional
campaigns on each other’s websites.
BSkyB’s director of new media John Swingewood said: ’It gives us an
opening for the worldwide distribution of Sky Sports’ own online
content. Sky’s community of sports fans will benefit from being able to
draw on the worldwide online sports content Sportal can offer.’
Rob Hersov, chief executive of Sportal, said: ’With Sky we can set the
pace for interactive sports content. Our alliance will give us an
advantage in reaching sports fans, whether they are on the web or
