Bury to leave O&M

Bury leaves the company after 13 years and there is to be no direct replacement. Mike Walsh, O&M chairman and European chief executive, has confirmed he is in talks with a number of candidates to fill the newly created role of group chairman.

Bury said in a statement on Tuesday morning: "I have been managing director and latterly chief executive of O&M for seven years and, in the context of the new group management structure, I could not foresee any new challenges that appealed. Mike and I have been totally honest with each other and decided to call it a day."

It was right at the start of 1998, in January, that O&M lost its grip on the £12 million Draught Guinness account to Abbott Mead Vickers.BBDO. The agency had held for account for the past 12 years.

In July, O&M was stripped of its role as Ford's lead agency across Europe in favour of Young & Rubicam, which was awarded the £65 million European Fiesta and Ka accounts.

Following the Ford loss, the agency announced 20 people were to be made redundant.

Bury has been in his current job since February 1997, having previously held the role of managing director since September 1992.

He was previously the agency's head of client services, with group director responsibility for Ford and Guinness, and before that was new-business director.

He joined O&M in 1985 to run the Guinness account after having worked at Young and Rubicam on Procter and Gamble and the Central Office of Information.
