Business Performance League - 21 February 1997

Wow. What happened? It’s all change at the top of the business performance league after the biggest week of wins and losses so far this year.

Wow. What happened? It’s all change at the top of the business

performance league after the biggest week of wins and losses so far this

year.

Abbey National’s decision to increase its budget to pounds 40 million

and pool it all into Euro RSCG Wnek Gosper has given the agency a

seemingly unassailable lead at the top. But M&C Saatchi in second has

not lost its knack of winning top accounts and still has room for

growth. Last week it added pounds 3 million to its 1997 tally after we

reveived confirmation of a pounds 3 million spend for Migraleve. The

race is not over yet.

Both these agencies had outstanding new-business years last year and are

used to occupying such dizzy heights. Unlike J. Walter Thompson. After a

miserable 1996, JWT risked altitude sickness by entering the top ten

this week on the back of its Mazda and Rimmel wins.

Mustoe Merriman Herring Levy is also enjoying happier times in ninth

place after picking up the pounds 3 million Viglen computers account. We

await confirmation of the budget for its earlier Internat-ional Paints

win.

Confirmation of Vimto’s spend would also help Cheetham Bell to climb the

table, which it entered at 26 this week. Vimto spent pounds 900,000 in

1996 but will reputedly invest more this year.
