Business Performance League 23 September 1996

In a quiet week for new business, it was Bartle Bogle Hegarty’s Cointreau win that stood out. Like many of BBH’s wins this year, the business is international, bringing an estimated pounds 8 million of billings through the London agency. However, because the league is based on UK billings only, BBH notches up pounds 2 million and moves up just one place.

In a quiet week for new business, it was Bartle Bogle Hegarty’s

Cointreau win that stood out. Like many of BBH’s wins this year, the

business is international, bringing an estimated pounds 8 million of

billings through the London agency. However, because the league is based

on UK billings only, BBH notches up pounds 2 million and moves up just

one place.

Frustrating though this is for agencies like BBH, UK spend is the only

truly verifiable figure and consequently, we believe, the fairest

currency.

If you think this is unfair, spare a thought for Walsh Trott Chick

Smith. In March, the agency won Labatt’s. Then Whitbread bought Labatt

UK Brewing and, in July, the account moved into the Whitbread roster

agencies, BBH and Lowe Howard-Spink. In May, Walsh Trott was appointed

by Sue Douglas to the pounds 6 million Sunday Express account. Last

week, following Douglas’s ousting as editor, the account went up for

review again. Cue thoroughly justifiable gnashing of teeth in Broadwick

Street.
