CAMPAIGN DIARY: Barker spurns Roses for sunny shoot in Rio

While the rest of you were enjoying the WCRS party, some of Campaign’s die-hard party animals were paying our friends in the north a visit at the Roses awards in Manchester.

Campaign’s die-hard party animals were paying our friends in the north a

visit at the Roses awards in Manchester.

We’re not ones to gossip but did anyone spot BMP DDB’s creative

director, Larry Barker, at the WCRS party? We certainly didn’t. And he

was also noticeably absent from the Roses, which he chaired. Barker’s

excuse of being on a shoot in Rio fell on deaf ears - indeed, many gags

were made at the expense of his exotic shoot location.

Never one to be accused of stretching a joke, Ray Sale, chief executive

of CIA Media Solutions and the host of the ceremony, brought a life-size

cardboard cut-out of Barker on stage and placed it on the awards

platform.

Despite being shadowed by Barker, we thought that J. Walter Thompson’s

Charity Charity did a great job of dodging the pellets that were being

fired from some of the tables inhabited by Barker’s disgruntled

detractors.

We did miss the fire-drill this year (What? The annual event has ended?

- Ed) but we feel safe in the knowledge that the re-entry cards will

become a collector’s item.

The cards simply showed the words ’Pass Out’ - and from what we saw,

no-one needed much encouragement.
