CAMPAIGN DIARY: BMP DDB pipped to pounds 27 million M&S account

Chris Powell, BMP DDB’s chairman, must be seriously pissed off. His agency has just been pipped at the post for the pounds 27 million Marks & Spencer account which last week found a home at Rainey Kelly Campbell Roalfe/Y&R. Powell knows that account should have been his.

Chris Powell, BMP DDB’s chairman, must be seriously pissed off. His

agency has just been pipped at the post for the pounds 27 million Marks

& Spencer account which last week found a home at Rainey Kelly Campbell

Roalfe/Y&R. Powell knows that account should have been his.



Under normal circumstances the events of the last week would have been

cause for some pretty long faces at any agency. But imagine the

additional distress that came with the knowledge that just a few weeks

before Powell and Alan McWalter, the M&S marketing director, were

enjoying a luxury two-week skiing holiday together - mid-pitch and much

to Powell’s delight.



It seems the desperate Powell got over-excited at the news that his

agency was in the final head-to-head and took some drastic action. No

matter that his missus might have fancied a lavish sunshine holiday in

Europe, Powell dragged the family off to the Canadian slopes, for what

he hoped would be a mutual love in.



Surely now all he had to do was wait for the good news. Shameless

toadying or pure coincidence - you decide. All that’s left to figure out

now is what Ms Rainey did to clinch the deal for her agency
