Campaign Diary: A filthy trick to play on a chap’s Volvo, but the message got through

Speaking of Volvo (as we do on the left), here’s a fine example of

guerrilla marketing that is commendably disrespectful of the car’s

latest, snappiest of slogans.



A bright team from BDH in Manchester came up with an idea for a local

firm, Big Shine Car Wash. They scoured the city for a really grimy Volvo

and, instead of writing on it the more usual ’please clean me’ or ’also

available in white’, the witty pair wrote ’underneath it’s a Volvo’,

accompanied by Big Shine’s logo and phone number.



It worked. A few days later, the car wash boss called them up to say the

owner had seen the message and actually taken his car in to them for a

clean.



Now Manchester-based Volvo drivers had better beware. Given the success

of the stunt, Big Shine is now considering mounting a more ambitious

campaign targeting every sufficiently filthy model in town.
