CAMPAIGN DIARY: I’M ONLY A PUNTER BUT ..

I’m beginning to get rather tired of production companies being surprised that I want to meet the director and get him to completely re-do my creative work. He’s one of ONLY five directors that I’m going to see and get to re-treat my campaign.

I’m beginning to get rather tired of production companies being

surprised that I want to meet the director and get him to completely

re-do my creative work. He’s one of ONLY five directors that I’m going

to see and get to re-treat my campaign.

Don’t they realise that after the input of five good directors, I should

have the ability to end up with a good script?

I mean, I’ve got a fab degree from a media course at Hull poly. I know

what I’m doing! I must know what I’m doing or I wouldn’t have been taken

on as a copywriter at a top London ad agency after only six months on a

placement! And these directors are getting the hump and saying that I

ask them to do my job for me? I mean, everything I’ve learned here

recently has only strengthened my beliefs. You get a few of the top

directors, or people whose work interests you and then ask them to

completely rewrite your scripts, dialogue, characters, action ... the

lot.

I’ve been criticised by some of these directors, who I believed were

creative people like myself, for comments in our creative meetings such

as, ’I want to see something that’s never been done before’, ’something

really cool’, ’something award-winning man’, ’it’s totally open guys -

we’ve got a really great client’, and ’well, there was this clip on MTV

I quite liked’.

I’m hoping very soon that myself and my partner will get our first

award, as some rep has just come to see me with a Czech short film

no-one’s ever seen. I’m thinking of borrowing the central themes,

characters and some scenarios for my next campaign. It’s classic but

modern at the same time.

I’m talking to some talented Albanian directors at the moment to come up

with an idea for a technique which I think could be the key to a

potentially award-winning film but I’m not sure. You might have seen

some of their work on MTV but I doubt it man.

When I get all these ideas together, you never know but I might just

like to have a go at directing it myself.
