Campaign Diary: Luke feels the force of Anderson & Lembke’s Star Wars presentation

The things that agencies will do to retain a piece of business fail to surprise us any more, but we are impressed by those who show a bit of imagination and risk offending the client they want to schmooze.

Anderson & Lembke was asked by Russell King, the business marketing

manager of Nynex, to introduce itself to the newly-merged Cable &

Wireless Communications, which Nynex is now part of.

Their new contact was Luke Broome, head of marketing - business

markets.

Instead of treating him to lunch at the Ivy, followed by a short

presentation, Anderson & Lembke did something rather different.

Playing on Broome’s first name, the agency came up with a Star Wars

theme.

It hired a full set of Star Wars costumes, packed the presentation into

a 5ft-long metal box, added a replica light sabre and hired a stretch

limousine.

But there was something missing. The agency hunted out a 6ft actor to

play Darth Vader and stuck a BT logo on the back of his cape. Darth and

his attendant troopers stormed into C&W and guarded the box until Broome

arrived. Darth then terrorised Broome and the reception staff with his

resonant ’Use the force, Luke’ and ramblings about Broome and his band

of rebels ’never defeating the Empire’.

Makes you wonder what stunt Rapier Stead & Bowden incorporated into its

pitch.
