ACNielsen MMS Qualifications

Agency client assignments are compiled from data supplied by agencies and media owners on a regular basis alongside information published in the marketing press. Billings for Top 50 Media Specialists are based on accounts handled on a media buying basis. Media covered: TV, display press, radio, cinema and outdoor. Tobacco and moving transport advertising are excluded from Outdoor figures. Press expenditures include an Advertising Association Discount factor, varying by sector and quarter. Agencies are listed according to the current name and structure for both 1999 and 2000.

Due to requests from the advertising community for ACNielsen MMS to produce data that best reflects billings, the methodology to compile this year's tables has been amended. For the first time, there are two Agency Buying tables - Agency Brand and Agency Trading Company. The intention is to show the billings of the component elements of each agency in the Brand table, while still giving the overall billings in the Trading table.

The companies concerned have supplied information to ACNielsen MMS on the component elements of their Trading agencies. The trading company table includes agency brands that operate within the same organisational structure, including regional offices. ACNielsen MMS previously listed these billings together in some cases, separately in others. The consequence of these changes is that in some cases, 2000 billings cannot be accurately compared with those of 1999.

During 2000, two media have had changes to their cost calculations. The Outdoor industry changed its costing methodology so that the figures are a more accurate reflection of expenditure. Radio too had amendments made to the costing model during 2000 to respond to changes in station sales policies. However, as the methodologies changed during 2000, it is not possible to historically amend Outdoor and Radio figures for 1999. Therefore, analysis of year-on-year figures will be affected accordingly.
