An internet start-up is offering to pay users pounds 1 an hour to view targeted ads while they are surfing.

An internet start-up is offering to pay users pounds 1 an hour to

view targeted ads while they are surfing., which launches this week, is one of a growing number of

companies helping online advertisers target consumers more


Consumers view the ads on a piece of software called an Adticker, which

sits at the bottom of the screen and rotates ads while they are


Unlike some rival services, including and,

users can view ads and earn money not only while surfing but while they

are using other applications such as e-mail as well.

Each user who signs up for fills out a profiling form

which matches them to the ads. They can also earn money from introducing

people to the service.

Stephen Leo, the managing director of net solutions, the company behind

GetPounds, said: ’This is a way for advertisers to reach the right


It is considerably more effective than simply putting an ad on a website

and hoping that the right people see it.’

The service will initially seek to sign up around 60,000 people but

expects to grow to a million within 18 months.

GetPounds is being promoted through a viral marketing campaign targeting

social and sports clubs.
