- A day after the death of Viscount Rothermere, the chairman of the Daily Mail and General Trust, the company's cable TV station Channel One has been closed.

The station, which broadcasts in London and Bristol, was launched with much fanfare in November 1994, but has led a precarious existence since with a massive scaling down of its operations last year.

Channel One's managing director Julian Aston said: "Our projected level of cable subscriptions will no enable Channel One to break even by the end of the present licence period so, sadly, the Channel will stop transmitting this month."

Channel One Liverpool, which is a joint venture with regional newspaper publisher Trinity Group is unaffected by the closure and will continue to broadcast.
