Jaques, the chairman of BBDO Asia Pacific for the past two years, will

take up the newly created post of president of Europe in early


He will have responsibility for 30 markets as one of three international

presidents reporting directly to Philip Palazzo, APL’s president of

international operations.

Regional chairmen, including William Eccleshare at APL London, will

report to Jaques.

The British-born Jaques has spent the past decade in Asia, rising to be

president of Bates Asia from 1993 to 1997.

His appointment ends an 18-month search for a European head, and

completes the network’s line-up of senior regional presidents.

Gunther Saupe was appointed president of Latin America and the Caribbean

a year ago, and Ian Creasey was made president of Asia Pacific in


Martin Puris, the network’s chief executive, said the appointments were

part of his strategy to put people he knows into senior positions -

rather than work with those he simply inherited when Ammirati & Puris

merged with the Lintas network in 1995. It is understood that, under

Puris, 18 members of the 30-strong worldwide board have left the

in Asia, but he’s from London so he comes from the right background.

He’s built very successful regions for Bates and BBDO and he understands

Jaques’ advertising career began in London, where he worked for D’Arcy

MacManus & Masius and Lowe Howard-Spink.

Under his stewardship, Bates Asia was Asia’s agency of the year in 1993

and 1996, as well as Asia’s most creative agency of the year in
