Jeremy Nicholds, NatWest’s head of marketing for card services, has quit

the bank to join Europay International as general manager of Mastercard

for the UK and Ireland. Nicholds takes up his new position this week.

A nationwide pub-based sweepstake promotion will be the centrepiece of

Carlsberg’s sponsorship of Euro 2000. The game, called Probaball, will

give drinkers the chance of winning prizes of up to pounds 1 million. It

begins this month and will run throughout the tournament, which lasts

from 10 June to 2 July. Carlsberg has also booked bumpers in every ad

break during the 16 matches and around related programming broadcast on

Evian has been signed up as title sponsor of the Ladies’ European Tour

golf tournament. The championship is likely to be renamed the Evian

Ladies’ European Tour. Other sponsors of the competition are Chrysler,

Compaq and Air France. Evian - part of Premier Waters - already sponsors

an annual tour event, the Evian Masters, which is held in France.

Camelot plans to boost sales of its mid-week Thunderball lottery game

with a week-long sampling exercise that will spark an estimated one

million ticket giveaway. The push, which will be supported by TV and

radio ads, is part of a three-month, pounds 12 million Camelot campaign.

US hair and beauty company Alberto Culver has poached Johnson & Johnson

European franchise marketing director Barton Warner as its new

vice-president of worldwide publishing. At Johnson & Johnson, Warner

headed marketing for the Clean & Clear and Ph5.5 brands. Alberto Culver

Scottish Courage is planning to launch a chilled real ale called

Theakston Cool Cask. The product is being launched in 400 selected

outlets in the north of England, including JD Wetherspoon and Tom

Cobbleigh pubs, prior to a national rollout in September. It will be

The amount spent on advertising by the UK’s top 50 e-commerce companies

increased to pounds 111 million in the six months to the end of

February, according to figures from AC Nielsen MMS. The figure is a

marked rise from the pounds 18 million spent in the six months to

A Burger King TV ad has been blocked by the Broadcast Advertising

Clearance Centre, forcing the fast-food giant to launch an online

version of the comparative execution that knocks arch-rival McDonald’s.

The BACC ordered Burger King to modify the advertisement because it

claimed its Double Burger range contained 26 per cent more beef than a
