Close-Up: 24 Hours with ... Adrian Young, Barclays

6.00am Wake up and grapple with the first big decision of the day: how many extra minutes to allow myself in bed. Today, I'm generous, and give myself ten.

7.00am The children are up now. I get them ready for the day, and then drop them off at the nursery.

8.15am Manage to get a seat on the train and read one or two morning papers to get a flavour of what's happening in the media world.

9.30am Get to our office in Soho Square. We are based close to our customers, in the heart of media-land. Quick initial check of e-mails and handle urgent issues.

10.00am Coffee meeting with a media-sector journalist. I talk through what's happening in the industry and recent deals we've been involved in.

11.00am Another meeting, this time with one of my relationship directors. We are pitching for a piece of new business, so we spend time thinking through our plan of attack, checking our approach and rehearsing our reference stories.

12.00pm Check my e-mails and return the calls that are stacking up on the voicemail.

1.00pm Lunch with one of our most active customers in terms of acquisitions. These situations often move very quickly, so we keep in regular contact to understand how their plans are developing, what targets they have in sight and how we might finance individual deals.

2.30pm An opportunity arises to join one of the relationship directors in a meeting with a key client. It's always good to see my team's relationship directors in action, so I can measure their progress.

4.00pm Back to the office, and those e-mails and voicemails. Nothing arrives by post these days except bills and junk mail, which I must not confuse.

6.30pm Drinks and dinner with a group of lawyers and accountants to identify ways we might work together to support the film industry as the tax-relief rules change.

10.00pm We part firm friends, and are all fired-up to work together.

11.30pm Finally home at the end of a long day. A quick catch-up with the news on TV and then to bed.
