Close-Up: 24 hours with ... Chris Macdonald, McCann Erickson

Name: Chris Macdonald
Job: Chief executive, McCann Erickson
Professional mission: Be the best that we can be
Professional mantra: Always look on the bright side of life

6.45am Woken to a rendition of Percy by Duffy (not a typo, but my five-year-old daughter's version).

7.15am Start car - it's a wolf in hybrid clothing. Dig around in footwell among the 20 free CDs sent to me by Warner Brothers.

8.04am Mobile rings. Nikki Crumpton on the phone for daily catch-up. As usual, she is irritated by Radio 4, but it has given her a great idea for Pulse (our in-house trends unit) to develop a research project.

8.20am Try to get into car-park as it continues a two-year restoration - it is starting to look like an underground disco.

8.30am Walk into agency; look around to see if Harry has done any more illustrations on the walls. He has been in the agency drawing for the past month.

9.30am Joined by Laura Simpson, the head of Pulse, who talks us through stage two of our study, Moody Britain (aptly entitled "Moodier Britain"). Feel strangely cheerful in light of such gloom.

12 noon Catch up with Mark Fallows, the head of digital, on our new website and new projects for UPS and L'Oreal.

12.55pm Rach, my PA, throws me out of building to meet client for lunch. Relieved when I arrive at the restaurant first.

2.30pm Return to agency for pitch run-through.

4.00pm Go down to Chrome (in-house digital production facility) to see the set-up for tonight's Xbox Rock Band launch event. Try the drums, the guitars and singing on the stage set up for party. Get booed by everyone passing. Put down microphone and make hasty retreat.

4.10pm Have another go on the guitar. Still not a rock legend.

4.30pm Cup of tea to get over rock exertions. Congratulate Jaakko, the head of our business-to-business unit, on winning a large pharmaceutical project.

5.30pm Find Brian and Simon to complain about their creative team being too good at Rock Band.

6.00pm Interview candidate for digital team. Would be a good hire.

7.00pm Back to Chrome for Rock Band Party and Champions League final.

9.45pm Phone wife to apologise for not phoning earlier.

10.40pm Leave agency. Party continues.

11.40pm Home and bed.

1 Why creative people have lost their way

What better way to kick off the inaugural issue of Campaign's monthly print offering than with another think piece on the current failings of our industry, written by an embittered, pretentious creative who misses "the way things used to be"...
