Close-Up: 24 hours with ... Enda McCarthy, DraftFCB

Name: Enda McCarthy
Job: Managing director, DraftFCB
Professional mission: Concentrate and look like you mean it
Personal mantra: Too much is never enough

6.00am Bubble bath and rehearse opening speech for 9.30am pitch.

6.45am Outfit crisis - flashback to the 2006 Annual - and decide to fake it as a digital MD regardless.

7.00am Walk to school.

7.40am Say hello to Nigel - in since 7.30am as usual - and already on the phone.

7.41am Say hello to Sergeant Balko - in all night for the second time in his first two weeks - and still enthusiastic.

8.00am Say hello to Calvertio - in at 8.00am as usual - and already looking strategic.

8.05am Convene pitch team for final run-through and explain that it's all down to them now.

9.30am Dump rehearsed speech and try for spontaneous wit.

10.15am Pitch not going well. Unilaterally change direction. Everything hangs in the balance.

10.25am Everything comes good.

11.15am Taxi. Phone call from Charles Faircloth - probably the best account man alive.

11.25am Text from Dale Gall - still winging it at VCCP - written in Australian and completely incomprehensible.

11.30am Reconvene with Logan and the pitch team (creatives wonder out loud why I'm wearing "crappy" trainers) and get all Mystic Meg over what will happen next.

11.31am Healing cup of tea.

12.00pm Morning Surgery opens, and I dispense wisdom and/or Hershey's Kisses.

1.00pm Lunch with our grads, two of whom went to Leeds University and will, therefore, go far.

3.00pm Meeting in Howard's office about agency website, which is suffering from too many cooks. Note zebra-skin chairs have gone.

3.15pm Sneak out and log on to Facebook - note that my brother Simon wants to name the lobster in my picture Michael Flatt.

3.55pm Sneak back in (not missed) to even more cooks.

4.10pm Sneak out again and e-mail Hannah Bentley - a former account princess turned TV type - and James Scudamore - a former planner turned increasingly famous novelist - and reflect on how brilliant people can be.

5.00pm Afternoon Surgery opens - less wisdom, more Kisses.

7.00pm Lift home with Nigel.

7.30pm Tea at Bombay Bicycle Club.

10.00pm Early to bed, early to rise.
